Autumn to Winter

The best time of day is early morning, when there has been a frost and the trees are sparkling in the sunlight. with the weak sun  shining through the bare branches, providing a little warmth.

There are so many leaves underfoot. Brown, yellow, red – such a myriad of colours, mixing with the seeds and fir cones that are strewn on the path.

All crisp from the frost, they crunch satisfactorily as I stride along, reminding me that each season has it’s own memories.

A pile of leaves by the side of the path leaves me wondering whether that is a home for a hedgehog, burrowing under the leaves to escape the cold.  Or perhaps a nest of ants or other busy scurrying insects live there.

The best find is a large toadstool by the old oak tree. Now this is definitely a fairy palace. How wonderful to be like Alice in Wonderland and shrink small enough to pay a visit!

Later in the day, the frost has melted away, but there is still a certain sharpness to the air. It reminds us that when we wake up tomorrow morning, the day will be full of white frost again.
